Chebeague Island is located about 10 miles northeast of the coast of Portland, in Casco Bay. Chebeague Island is the biggest unbridged island in the bay. Chebeague Island is similar in population to North Haven—about 350 residents year-round. The summer months see a population that is almost triple.
“Chebeague” is widely recognized to mean “Island of Many Springs”. So named by the Wabanaki Confederacy (which includes the nations of Maliseet, Abenaki, Penobscot, Passamaquoddy, and Mi’kmaq), Chebeague Island was first settled upon in the mid-18th century.
